Experience Pärt’s favourite choir

90-year-old Arvo Pärt’s favourite choir and long-term collaborator Vox Clamantis presents an impressive concert program, under the heading Da Pacem Domine – Grant us peace, performing works from the composer’s long and rich career. At the concert, the audience will experience Pärt’s Magnificat, Da Pacem Domine, Nunc Dimittis, and And I Heard a Voice. Vox Clamantis’ interpretation of Pärt is world-class. The concert program also includes Gregorian antiphons and liturgical choral music by our very own Henrik Ødegaard, as well as music by Estonian Helena Tulve. Ødegaard’s compositions subtly blend Gregorian chant, Norwegian folk song, and hymns, giving a unique expression with its own tonal language and polyphony. Vox Clamantis performs excerpts from Ødegaard’s eight-part Meditations over St. Mary Magdalene’s feast in Nidaros, based on antiphons found in a 13th century manuscript from medieval Scandinavia. The Meditations were recorded and released on ECM in 2023 to glowing reviews. Through beautiful music, Vox Clamantis and conductor Jaan-Eik Tulve want to put forth a quiet cry for peace.

Vox Clamantis consists of 12 singers with a great passion for Gregorian chant, early polyphony, and contemporary music. Since being founded in 1996, the vocal ensemble has established itself as one of Europe’s foremost performers within these genres. In addition to their work with early music, the choir has performed several contemporary works written especially for the ensemble. Among these, we find works by Estonian composers such as Arvo Pärt, Helena Tulve, and Erkki-Sven Tüür, and recently by Norwegian Henrik Ødegaard. The group has won several awards for its recordings, and won a Diapason d’or in 2013 for the album Liszt – Via crucis. They have also participated in the recording of Pärt’s Adam’s Lament, which won a Grammy for ‘Best Choral Performance’ in 2014, and in the soundtrack of the Oscar-winning movie La grande bellezza. Vox Clamantis is under the direction of conductor and artistic director Jaan-Eik Tulve.

Jaan-Eik Tulve is one of Estonia’s leading choir conductors. After studying at the conservatory in Tallinn, he studied Gregorian chant at Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, graduating in 1993. Since 1996, Tulve has been teaching Gregorian chant at Eesti Muusika-ja Teatriakadeemia in Estonia. He has received several accolades for his work with vocal music, such as The Order of the White Star in Estonia and l’Ordre des Arts et det Lettres in France. In 2017, Tulve was named musician of the year by Eesti Rahvusringhäälingu (Estonian Public Broadcasting).
