The Swedish Margareta Church 100 Years
Per Anders Håvelsrud, organ

Anniversary concert in Margaretakyrkan
Margaretakyrkan, the Swedish church in Oslo, has been a close collaborator of the festival for many years. In 2025, the church celebrates its 100-year anniversary and welcomes us to a concert with Per Anders Håvelsrud at the Setterquist & Son organ that has filled the church with music for a hundred years. The program features music by prominent figures in Scandinavian organ music over the last century: Arild Sandvold (1895–1984), Otto Olsson (1879–1964), and Harald Fryklöf (1882–1919). Håvelsrud also presents works by Europe’s first female cathedral organist, Elfrida Andrée (1841–1929). In 1857, Andrée became the first woman in Sweden to take the organist examination. However, she was forbidden to play in the church – it was considered inappropriate to see a woman play the organ during devotions. Andrée actively worked to change the law so that it would be possible for women to hold positions as organists. After a lot of resistance, the law was finally changed in 1861, and Andrée later became the cathedral organist in Gothenburg. Arild Sandvold was involved in purchasing the organ in the Swedish Margareta Church, and was a consultant when the organ was built. He suggested extending the manual range from 56 to 58 notes, as well as replacing the intended Euphone 8' with a Bourdon 16’ in the Swell.

PROGRAM:

Harald Fryklöf (1882–1919):
Impromptu festivo

Elfrida Andrée (1841–1929):
Symphonische Dichtung

Otto Olsson (1879–1964):
1st movement from Sonata for organ in E major
Meditation, op. 14, no. 2

Arild Sandvold (1895–1984):
Introduction and Passacaglia, op. 4

Per Anders Håvelsrud is a trained church musician and organist from the Norwegian Academy of Music. Spring 2023, he completed his Master’s examination in solo organ performance in Oslo Cathedral, playing music by Max Reger, after studying with the professors Terje Winge and Kåre Nordstoga. Håvelsrud now works as an organist at the Swedish Margareta Church and is an active freelance musician, conductor, and program creator. He is sought-after as an organist, both for liturgical use, concerts, and accompaniment. As well as partaking in bigger projects with choirs and orchestras, he often plays the continuo for different chamber musical constellations.
