Trio Mediæval
Catalina Vicens, organetto

The Middle Ages and the present in elegant dialogue
Trio Mediæval brings new life to Medieval motets and mass movements when they adapt them to a trio of female voices, in collaboration with Catalina Vicens playing organetto. The repertoire is based on the Old Hall Manuscript – one of the most expansive and important collections of Medieval music, especially known for its significance for English music from the period. The manuscript was put together during the 15th century, from a desire to preserve motets and mass movements by contemporary performers, but disappeared for several centuries before it was rediscovered in the 19th century. After a long time of silence, this music is finally brought back into the spotlight by Trio Mediæval, together with newer pieces by the composers David Lang (b. 1957) and Marianne Reidarsdatter Eriksen (b. 1971). David Lang’s alleluia amen is a meditative exploration of these two words that are common to Jewish and Christian traditions, while Eriksen’s Sol lucet uses timeless lines from the Roman writer Petronius’ classic Satyricon, written in the first century. This combination of old and new music gives the audience a unique and captivating experience where historic and modern sounds meet in an elegant musical dialogue.

Trio Mediæval consists of the members Linn Andrea Fuglseth, Anna Maria Friman, and Jorunn Lovise Husan. Their repertoire ranges from historically oriented interpretations of Medieval sacred music and folk music, to modern Nordic jazz, commissioned works, and improvisation with and without instruments. The critically acclaimed trio has collaborated with a number of recognised composers and performers, such as Helena Tulve, Tord Gustavsen, and Mats Eilertsen. Trio Mediæval has toured large parts of the world, and performed at prestigious concert halls such as Concertgebouw, Wiener Konzerthaus, and Carnegie Hall.

Catalina Vicens has made a name for herself playing a number of historic keyboard instruments, including organetto. She works with instrument builders and composers to give new life to historic instruments, and has since 2021 been the curator of the Tagliavini collection in Bologna. Vicens is a guest professor in harpsichord at the Koninklijk Conservatorium van Brussel, and holds masterclasses at respected institutions all over the world. As the director of the ensemble Servir Antico, she combines research, historical performances, and a social engagement.
