Katrine Gislinge, piano
The Danish pianist Katrine Gislinge performs a complete concert programme with piano works by Bent Sørensen (b. 1958), Claude Debussy (1862–1918), and Sergei Rachmaninov (1873–1943). Debussy’s euphoric and adventurous music offers phenomenological and palpable descriptions of the world. Gislinge performs Reflets dans l'eau (Reflections on the Water), Clair de lune (Moonlight), and L'isle joyeuse (The Joyful Island). Debussy’s music provides a beautiful contrast to Rachmaninov’s Piano Sonata no. 2 in B flat minor, Op. 36, written during the same period, but with an expressive and emotive musical language. The sonata is a remarkable work that requires technical excellence, and with a sombre mood that is typical of Rachmaninov’s music. Building a bridge between these two masterpieces, is 12 Nocturnes by Bent Sørensen in the middle; music that combines Debussy’s ethereal sounds and Rachmaninov’s emotive disposition. Bent Sørensen’s 12 nocturnes is a collection of nocturnal scenes that was completed in 2014. Most of the pieces are written for Leif Ove Andsnes and Katrine Gislinge, who kindled his interest in composing for the piano. Gislinge performs Nocturne 1–6.
There is something about the combination of the piano and the night. I have always been fascinated by the sound of a piano from far away, and many times when I have walked through the darkness of the city at night – I’ve been stopped by the sound of a piano that presses itself from a window. The most beautiful night sound – enigmatic and mystical in a way that is inexplicable - Bent Sørensen
